- Boston Bailey No.5
- c.1867 ~
Type 1 ~ EXTREMELY RARE & VG+
Leonard Bailey invented and manufactured the first models of what has become,
through evolution, the hallmark of the Stanley's primary product line of
carpenter planes through the years. Bailey sold his plane business in 1869 to
Stanley Rule & Level Co.and the name
BAILEY first appeared on the front of the
bed casting in 1902, Type 9. This earliest No.5 Plane shows that except
for mechanical improvements, the Bailey bench plane has stayed true to its
form over a period of 100+ years. This plane as pictured, is missing the
banjo spring lever and double iron. Otherwise it is complete with original
parts, including the handle (minor early repair to to top), knob (minor chipping at
base & dents on top), frog marked (BOSTON-
BAILEY.....& CO..PATENTED..AUG.31.1858 ..AUG.6.1867) brass
adjustment nut, knurling perfect. Bed & frog have 98%+ original
japanning, throat not cracked, chipped or enlarged and some very minor
speckling/pitting and scratches on the sides and bottom. Incised "5" on handle
condition ratings are used to qualify and describe items in a general
manner. In addition, most items are described with remarks in
respect to percent of original finish (including re-paints); pitting;
chips; breaks; repairs, owner's marks; missing, replaced and/or
non-vintage parts, etc. My perception of condition is conservative
and hopefully you will be pleased with receiving an item that will be
better than your expectations.
